Clay Tiles High-quality clay and shale deposits are selected for mining based on their mineral compositions, which are responsible for the hardness, durability, and the color of the finished project. The raw material is crushed and ground into fine powder. The materials are mixed as the clay is wetted and worked to become a homogeneous mass of the proper plasticity. The clay is extruded, cut to size, and formed or pressed into the various shapes and styles of clay roofing tile. The natural red color of clay tile results from the firing process. High-gloss ceramic glazes may be applied to fired tile, which in turn is refired to add durable color and gloss to the surface. |
