Break out the eggnog, and turn on the holiday music, the holiday season is upon us! Before you begin decorating, make sure you’re doing so safely. We’ve gathered our top safety tips for you and your home below:
Keep Yourself Safe
One of the best parts of the holiday season is getting to deck the house out in lights, garland, and other decorations! However, if you are decorating the exterior of your home, it’s important to make sure you’re doing so safely. Chances are you’ll be using a ladder, especially when working on the roof, gutters, and eaves of the house. Make sure you’re operating it safely! Here are a few of our top ladder safety tips, to keep you safe and healthy:
Ladders are usually plastered with labels and safety instructions, read them all before operating!
Make sure to inspect the ladder every time you use it!
Always maintain 3 point contact with the ladder. This means, keep two feet and one hand on the ladder at all times.
Try to only use the ladder when someone else is home, and if possible have them spot you.
Only operate the ladder if the weather is good. Never use a ladder when there is rain or lightning!
Keep Your Roof Safe
Once you’re sure that you can decorate while keeping yourself safe, it’s time to focus on keeping your house and roof safe. Whether you like to decorate with strands of lights, or with lifesize reindeer and sleigh figures, there’s plenty of decor options to choose from.
However, you’ll want to make sure you’re not adding too much weight to your roof. Especially on the eaves and the gutters. It’s common to hang strands of lights on the edges of the gutters, and this is sure to make your home look and feel festive, but make sure your gutters are in good condition before doing so. The last thing you want is for the weight of rainfall and the lights to pull your gutters from the roof.
